Copenhagen based practice BIG architects designed a high-rises that will reshape the city of Guiyang in China. Among several other international architects, BIG will help redefine Guiyang’s Huaxi district, the city’s educational and cultural center. By proposing a generic hotel slab on one of Huaxi’s mountain slopes, architects envisioned a new and unique landmark, attracting visitors to an area already known for its touristic appeal.

Copenhagen based practice BIG architects have created 'Transitlager', the winning competition proposal to renovate and extend a warehouse in the industrial district of Basel, Switzerland. Dating from the 1960s, the 18,000 square meter concrete structure will receive an additional 7,000 square meters for residences and arts-related spaces to transform the upcoming Dreispitz neighborhood into a bustling arts district. Visually separated into two stacked volumes, the combination will become a hybrid of mixed-use program, rearranging the distribution within the existing floors to merge activity from the art, commerce, work and living spaces.

Copenhagen-based practice BIG has won 1st prize in the international design competition for a new 27,000 m2 cultural complex in Tirana, Albania. Developed in collaboration with Martha Schwartz landscape, Buro Happold, Speirs & Major, Lutzenberger & Lutzenberger, and Global Cultural Asset Management, the project consists of a mosque, an islamic center, and a museum of religious harmony. The winning entry was selected out of five finalists, including Zaha Hadid, spanish architect Andrés Perea Ortega, Architecture Studio from France and Dutch seARCH.

Danish practice BIG has won the stockholmsporten master plan competition, a call to design an inviting entrance portal into the city of stockholm at the intersection of a newly planned super-junction. A collaboration with engineering consultants grontmij and spacescape, the team beat out, among others, proposals from norwegian firm snohetta, danish landscape architect kristine jensen and swedish erik giudice architects.

Copenhagen based practice BIG has unveiled the design of 'ice hockey rink in umea', a 4,600 m2 sports facility located on a bowl-shaped plot in northern sweden. accentuating the natural topography of the site, the design extends and continues the shape of the land into its interior space.

On Tuesday, February 07, Durst Fetner Residential (DFR) announced the design of West 57, a 600-unit 80/20 residential building on West 57th Street between 11th and 12th Avenues. The building is designed by renowned Danish Architect firm BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group and is their inaugural North American project. The building’s programme consists of over 600 residential units of different scales situated on a podium with a cultural and commercial program. The building will strive for LEED Gold Certification.
